“Because Jesus loves Turkey?”
… this was the innocent answer that I received this past Sunday when i asked the kindergarten class why we all get together and eat with our families on Thanksgiving. Although it was a cute and funny answer and a great offer for to all the possible suggestions we were casually talking about, had a very key element… Thanksgiving includes Jesus.
It’s fair to say we get a little caught up in the bookends of Thanksgiving. It is often refer to it as the “forgotten” holiday, the speed bump between Halloween and Christmas. Maybe its the meal that sustains us through our Black Friday adventures, where we can push, pinch, and drag ourselves and others through a ridiculous maze of people just to get a good “deal”… this year one store advertises their “Thanks-GETTING” sale!
Is Thanksgiving just a day off work where we excuse over eating, complain about spending time with our relatives we only see once a year, pass out in front of a football game only to wake in time to make the midnight madness of sales? There are less fortunate people who couldn’t even imagine the amount of food we throw out this Thursday.
Perhaps it should be a day off form the incessant complaining that I find myself engaging in”… my house is too small, there is nothing to eat in this house… i have nothing to wear…. ” Sound familiar? We should enjoy the food we have, the family that surrounds our table. This Thanksgiving take a look around the table at the generations that are represented, relish the moments you have with those “crazy” old people, and remember to Thank the Lord for what he has given you. Don’t forget we are able to have all these things because Jesus loves us (and maybe he loves Turkey too ;0) ).
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving, [And] His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. For the LORD is good; His loving kindness is everlasting, And His faithfulness to all generations” Psalm 100:4-5

“Being grateful is a choice. It’s not a feeling dependent on our circumstances” -Barbara Rainey
It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of stuffing turkeys and our faces this Thanksgiving. I can smell the turkey now…mmmm..mmmmm…. Or maybe you are the type to just blow right past this neglected holiday like our fellow retail and radio station friends like to do. So before you join in singing your fa-la-la-las and get lost in the whirlwind of wrapping paper and tree ornaments this holiday season, I challenge you to take time out these next few weeks to spend time giving thanks and maybe spreading the gratitude (instead of the swine flu) through our families
Click the link check out Barbara Rainey’s Family life article titled “Grumbling or gratitude..” And check back next week on more encouragement for gratitude in your families.
Feel free to leave what you are thankful for as a comment.

Got Flu?
Well it’s here. H1N1 (better known as the swine flu). The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) are doing every thing they can to help us prevent the spread of the disease. For up to date information, go to the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov. Click on diseases and and conditions, then H1N1. Everything you need to know is on their site. Click on the following to go directly to the page that describes how you can care for your loved ones with the flu at home, guidelines for cleaning, etc. http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_homecare.htm
The staff here at Main Street are doing their part to help prevent the spread as well. You will see boxes of Kleenex as well as hand sanitizer placed in several areas throughout the building. Please be kind to one another, God understands illness, and will excuse you from church during your illness. The best way to prevent the spread of any disease is PROPER HANDWASHING (washing your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap-about how long it takes to sing the ABC’s. If you can’t get to wash your hands, use the alcohol based hand sanitizers. Avoid touching your hands to your eyes, nose, and mouth, if possible. You are considered not contagious when the fever is gone for at least 24 hours (without the use of fever medications). If everyone does their part, the H1N1 doesn’t stand a chance to keep spreading.
Have and safe and illness free autumn and God Bless,
Holly Kuhl

Kid’s Avenue Leaders Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I serve? Typically Sunday School Leaders serve a minimum of 3 Months (1 quarter) at a time. Some Leaders do choose to serve longer. There are special situations where leaders serve shorter term.
Why should I serve for a minimum of three months? Serving in a block of time allows you to build a personal relationship with the children. When you serve for 3 months or longer the children begin to recognize you as their leader and feel comfortable with you. When we are constantly switching leaders, children- especially preschoolers- are very reluctant to stay. WE want to minimize the discomfort and anxiety children feel when they encounter unfamiliar leaders. When you volunteer for a class we encourage you to shadow your class before you serve so you and the children can transition easily.
Where can I get supplies for the class? The basic supplies are in each classroom. They are located in bins marked Kid’s avenue. In the bins you will find scissors, glue sticks, markers, crayons, a hole punch, tape, scratch paper and construction paper. For additional supplies check the closet located behind the Kid’s Avenue desk.
What if I can’t find what I need? If there are specific or special supplies that are needed for your class contact Magen Nice, Minister of Intergenerational Education and she can have them for you by the next week. Also if you notice supplies in your bins are getting low be sure to contact Magen so your bins can be restocked.
What if I need to miss a Sunday while I am serving? Each Sunday we count on our volunteers to be present. It is very important for you to be on time and to show up when you volunteer to lead. Please contact Magen ahead of time when you know that you will be missing a Sunday. When you receive your curriculum you will be given a calendar for the quarter, please fill out the calendar with the dates you know you will be missing a head of time. **Please try not to call Sunday morning to inform the Kid’s Avenue team that you will not be leading your class unless it is an unforeseen event ( sickness or an emergency)** When at all possible inform Magen or the Kid’s avenue team ahead of time. Whenever possible arrange your own substitute for your class. If you are unable to find a sub please contact Magen She will help you.
Who do I ask if I have additional questions? Contact Magen Niece Minister of Intergenerational Education if you have any additional questions or comments
Do you feel spread too thin.. pulled in a million different directions? Are there times when you wonder if you are living your life to its fullest?
We all have those moments, and as women we tend to pile on more on top of ourselves even if we are in over our heads. We add a new responsibility to the pile when we really need to let one go. Whether it be that we need to be in control or that we feel we have no one to share the responsibility with… this unbalanced and anxiety filled life is not how God designed it to be.
In Lexington,KY there is a women’s life coaching organization called iBloom, they have various seminars and events available to women and help us to have the insight and encouragement to clear our plates and learn what is important.
“With God’s power at work within us, God can do much, MUCH more than anything we can ask or imagine. To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.”
